Overdetermined Elliptic Systems

چکیده
We consider linear overdetermined systems of partial differential equations. We show that the introduction of weights classically used for the definition of ellipticity is not necessary, as any system that is elliptic with respect to some weights becomes elliptic without weights during its completion to involution. Furthermore, it turns out that there are systems which are not elliptic for any choice of weights but whose involutive form is nevertheless elliptic. We also show that reducing the given system to lower order or to an equivalent one with only one unknown function preserves ellipticity.

Counterexamples to Symmetry for Partially Overdetermined Elliptic Problems
We exhibit several counterexamples showing that the famous Serrin’s symmetry result for semilinear elliptic overdetermined problems may not hold for partially overdetermined problems, that is when both Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions are prescribed only on part of the boundary. Our counterexamples enlighten subsequent positive symmetry results obtained by the first two authors for suc...
متن کاملLocally-corrected spectral methods and overdetermined elliptic systems
We present fast locally-corrected spectral methods for linear constant-coefficient elliptic systems of partial differential equations in d-dimensional periodic geometry. First, arbitrary second-order elliptic systems are converted to overdetermined first-order systems. Overdetermination preserves ellipticity, while first-order systems eliminate mixed derivatives, resolve convection-diffusion co...
متن کاملNo geometric approach for general overdetermined elliptic problems with nonconstant source
We discuss the geometric approach developed in [8] for the study of overdetermined boundary value problems for general elliptic operators. We show that this approach does not apply when nonconstant sources are involved.
متن کاملClassification of the solutions to an overdetermined elliptic problem in the plane
we classify the solutions to an overdetermined elliptic problem in the plane in the finite connectivity case. This is achieved by establishing a one-to-one correspondence between the solutions to this problem and a certain type of minimal surfaces.
متن کاملOn partially and globally overdetermined problems of elliptic type
We consider some elliptic PDEs with Dirichlet and Neumann data prescribed on some portion of the boundary of the domain and we obtain rigidity results that give a classification of the solution and of the domain. In particular, we find mild conditions under which a partially overdetermined problem is, in fact, globally overdetermined: this enables to use several classical results in order to cl...
